Abstract | Virtual library? Electronic library? Digital library? Online information network? These all apply to the growing number of Web-based resource collections managed by consortiums of state library entities. Some, like "INFOhio" and "KYVL" ("Kentucky Virtual Library"), have been available for a few years, but others are just starting. Searching for these websites is a challenge because the language that librarians use to define this new type of library varies widely. Subscription resources, access to a statewide union catalog, Web resources, primary source documents, and instructional resources that teach searchers about the virtual library all seemed important characteristics for state virtual libraries. In this article, the author presents a list of state virtual libraries and discusses their contents. (Contains 2 figures.) (ERIC). |
