Abstract | In this article, the author relates how she discovered that she was a book and paper artist after she had been kicked out of two high schools, went to art school, had a degree in Political Science and Women's Studies, had another one in Education, and was teaching school full time. After she constructed and stitched her first multisection flat-back book at Artists Book Works, the world suddenly made sense. She now teaches book making to children and adults. Here, she describes how her childhood, which was steeped in a do-it-yourself (DIY) culture, mostly influenced her inclinations to teaching. Her parents championed self-sufficiency and cooperative learning: a belief that individuals and groups could get together and make things from a manual or kit, keeping costs as low as possible, fixing rather than throwing out what one owns, and seeing a project through from beginning to end. She also shares how one can make a three-hole pamphlet stitch book. (Contains 6 resources, 3 figures and 4 notes.) (ERIC). |
