Abstract	As economic conditions worsen and enrollments surge, community colleges make two basic moves. They increase class size, add more sections, hire more part-time instructors, boost tuition, and create more parking spaces to accommodate more students. Then they slash spending by cutting things before people--travel, staff development funds, equipment and supplies. Generally, austerity problems subside as recovery begins, but the author wonders if the current squeeze may be different. In this article, the writer questions whether it is time for community colleges to rethink some of the fundamentals of how they do their business in an effort to emerge from this round of adversity stronger, more competitive and better positioned. He discusses the reasons why colleges are reluctant in implementing changes to their business practices. (Contains 3 figures.) (ERIC).
