Abstract | A pilot action learning set was established in late September 2002, with the objective to develop a model of action learning appropriate for R&D managers. This initiative was one of a number of responses to a request for training and support by a small group of R&D managers who were based in non-teaching acute and primary care NHS trusts. The combination of action and constructive questioning would assist the R&D manager in gaining deeper insight into their workplace problems, and the consequences of different possible outcomes, for their organization and for themselves. Progress has been reviewed with the set after four, seven and eleven months, to ensure that the format and content of the meetings is addressing the development and support needs of the R&D managers. The set has already made significant progress in achieving their early objectives. They have gained in confidence, and internalized action learning processes. It is no longer necessary for them to wait for the next set meeting in order to resolve difficult workplace problems, as they have become capable of individualized active reflection. This paper describes the establishing of the set and progress made in its first year. (As Provided). |
