| Abstract | This historical case study explores the twin forces of collaboration and competition within independent schooling by examining the merger of two long established and well respected independent schools in Cincinnati, Ohio: (1) College Preparatory School; and (2) Hillsdale-Lotspeich School. Their merger in 1974 led to the creation of The Seven Hills School, currently the largest secular independent college preparatory school in Ohio. The city of Cincinnati and its suburbs are an excellent research setting for scholarly work on the history of American private schooling, including independent schools. Hamilton County, which contains Cincinnati, is ranked second in the nation amongst the 100 most populous counties in terms of the percentage of children attending some type of private school. In Hamilton County, 25% of all the children are enrolled in private schools, as compared to a national figure of about 12%. (ERIC). |
