Abstract | This article outlines the efforts of one man in a war-ravaged country to make a radical difference in the lives of children that have suffered the consequences of civil strife. The author was leader of a Baptist denomination in Liberia throughout a period of a civil war that devastated the country. Despite personal and political turmoil, he is an example of someone that cares deeply for children. He continues to act on their behalf so they may imagine a better future. His primary approach in helping Liberian children to rise from social chaos was to speak with them about their ultimate concerns and spend his time listening to their responses. The purpose of the article is to recommend his simple process and to suggest that listening to children tell their stories and share their dreams is a constructive and meaningful interaction in which their value as persons is perceived and affirmed, an action that is particularly significant to those that have experienced the fundamental losses inherent in civil warfare, in which many children were forced to fight themselves.
