AbstractWhen the final report of Secretary of Education Margaret Spelling's Commission on the Future of Higher Education was released in September 2006, the call for higher education to focus on measuring and reporting "meaningful student learning outcomes" was a major charge. The report's suggestion that some standardized tests might be used to collect assessment data was met with calls within the academy for better curriculum-embedded methods of assessment. In this article, the authors describe ChemQuery, an assessment system they developed that uses a framework of the key ideas in the discipline, called the Perspectives of Chemists, and item response modeling to map student progress in and between courses. They also describe a study they conducted involving high school and university students in order to assess the effectiveness of ChemQuery. (ERIC).
