AbstractThis article presents the author's response to the contributions and discussion initiated by his book "Democracy and Music Education" (2005). The book raises a number of important concerns pertaining to the field of music education, concerns that will continue to be critically important to many music teachers as they grapple with the musical, educational, and political consequences of their work. The author believes that the negative reaction from undergraduate and graduate music education majors to his book is only an emotional reaction akin to the way that Allan Bloom's "The Closing of the American Mind" is often received by undergraduates. He reminds those who initially react negatively of the democratic principles of intellectual honesty, openness, and tolerance, while also explaining that a university education is supposed to challenge their preconceptions and understandings of their professions and of the world. He, thus, welcomes critical reviews of his book because they provide the necessary stimuli for him to do more research, to better explain himself, and to correct misinterpretations or errors. As for those who disagree with his democratic vision, or take exception to his criticisms, the author urges them to contribute their own constructive ideas and visions to professional and public forums so they can learn from each other.
