| Abstract | Teaching is a popular pursuit among many second-generation career-seekers. The road from the private sector to the classroom often is littered with time-consuming and difficult requirements--for subject matter mastery, credentialing, and licensure. Too often qualified people check out the rules, consider the challenges, and give up. That wasn't the case for Wylie Schwieder, who found the Virginia Community College System's (VCCS's) Career Switchers Program. Schwieder started the Career Switchers Program in January and has already been hired as a long-term substitute, teaching Algebra II and pre-calculus to high school students while continuing to work on his teaching credential. Schwieder indeed has found his calling. Millions of others in their 40s, 50s, and beyond are just beginning to look for encore careers that offer personal meaning, an opportunity to contribute to society, and the pay and benefits they need to sustain their way of life. Though not everyone needs retraining to find their encore career, many require preparation to make the transition. Community colleges are a natural fit for this unique and growing group of learners. This article describes a few examples of the progress and lessons learned on three specific arenas that are in high demand, both by individuals searching for careers and by employers searching for workers--education, health care, and social services. The growing interest in encore careers is a win-win for employers, communities, experienced adults, and the community colleges that bring these efforts together. With a specific focus on flexible programs, motivational and peer support, counseling and career help, as well as targeted marketing and recruitment, community colleges are creating new pathways into meaningful, socially beneficial careers for millions of people in the second half of life.
