Abstract | Behavioral expectations start at the top; a leader's behavior is observed and long remembered. A president's actions send important messages and can have much influence on faculty and unit accountability. That influence can spread through the system, helping ensure that the total university is accountable to students and other clientele, as well as to state and federal taxpayers. In this article, the author talks about presidential accountability and suggests ways of demonstrating accountability for students and for research, as well as demonstrating personal accountability.
