Abstract | This article describes how to create the life-size teacher portraits that are displayed during an annual "Meet the Teacher" event held to introduce students and families to the facility and staff of the Apple Glen Elementary School in Bentonville, Arkansas. Several months prior to this event, students are asked to closely observe their classroom teacher, paying particular attention to their clothing, shoes, hair, facial expressions, jewelry, and teaching pose. The students then begin to draw their teachers, later adding the details they had observed. Later, the figures are cut out, each adorned with a name tag, and stored until time for the next annual "Meet the Teacher" event. Not only do the students enjoy painting their teachers, but the teachers themselves loved seeing how their students viewed them. This lesson addresses the national standard that requires students to use virtual structures and functions to communicate ideas. (ERIC). |
