Abstract | Major discontinuities exist between the way learning is conceptualized in most school settings and the way learning and meaning-making happens outside of school. The author challenges educators to engage in a serious conversation about methods for mending the mismatch. The challenge for educators is not simply to imagine a different way of looking at learning but to do so in the shadow of the massive enterprise that currently manages and controls learning activity. As they look for reasonable ways to proceed, the author suggests educators begin to realize just how much their thinking is constrained by the ways in which they have framed their own experience with schools, and with learning. He states that educators can engage in active and informed dialogue about the educational practices that they are supporting and maintaining for their students. To facilitate this discussion, educators need tools to help with orienting themselves--tools to help them determine where they stand with respect to competing views of the enterprise.
