AbstractMonroe Community College (MCC), a two-year institution in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, attempted to launch an assessment initiative in 1990 but was only marginally successful. The effort concluded in 1991 with the development of student learning objectives for several academic programs. The early assessment organization featured a coordinating committee and department assessment coordinators but lacked a permanent system to provide the consistent communication and follow-up that are critical for continual assessment. From 1999 to 2001, an assessment task force reviewed the previous assessment effort and recognized the need for an assessment coordinator. This position would be filled by a tenured MCC faculty member, who would train faculty and facilitate the design of an assessment framework. Through this framework, MCC faculty devised the assessment liaison system as a key aspect of ensuring faculty involvement. MCC faculty further refined the liaison system as a result of a pilot program for general education assessment that was conducted in spring 2002. Faculty assessment committees were added to the framework to support assessment liaisons and to ensure additional faculty involvement. The benefits, as well as the challenges, of an assessment liaison system are discussed. (ERIC).
