AbstractWilliam Paterson University (WPUNJ) is a midsize, public, comprehensive university in northern New Jersey, seventeen miles from New York City. The university offers thirty undergraduate and nineteen graduate degree programs in five colleges, has 350 full-time faculty members, and enrolls approximately 11,000 students. While faculty and staff at WPUNJ have struggled with assessment issues over the past two decades, they have made notable progress in their assessment initiatives in recent years. In addition to initiating and implementing assessment measures, they have succeeded in making assessment an integral part of the culture of their university. Their success in creating an assessment culture can be attributed to a number of factors, including the creation of university-wide policies, the implementation of permanent assessment structures, the encouragement of an enlightened administration, and opportune use of accreditation processes to engage faculty. This article discusses these factors by focusing on the history of assessment at William Paterson University, assessment structures, and the processes of implementation. (ERIC).
