Abstract | During the spring semesters of 1999 through 2003, the general education subcommittee of Oakton Community College's (Des Plaines, Illinois) Student Academic Assessment Team (SAAT) implemented a locally developed institutional approach for assessing students' achievement of general education objectives. The overall process remained essentially the same for the first four years; in 2003, the process was changed to accommodate general education objectives that had not been assessed previously. The purpose of this article is to describe Oakton's process, present results, and discuss ways in which the college plans to foster discussions about the meaning of the results and what they indicate in regard to teaching and learning.
