Abstract | In this article, the author shares his journey with autism which began when his son, David Braxton Hughes Lowe, was diagnosed in September of 2005. It was the confirmation of suspicions that he had had since he was about a year old. As a father and a physician, this was a particularly disheartening sequence of events. Over the next few months, he slowly became aware that little was known about the etiology of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or even the possible pathophysiological mechanisms of ASD. He also came to realize that treatment options were limited with "early intervention" and methods such as applied behavioral analysis, or ABA, being considered the best options for treatment. So, he looked at his little boy with autism and decided to change the focus of his research and his life. (ERIC). |
