Abstract | Although all academic leaders do not begin their administrative careers as department chairs, for faculty this is a common first step. And it is reasonable to assume that strong department chairs are likely to become college deans, provosts, and presidents. In this chapter, the authors examine the experiences of academicians-turned-administrators, the role of professional development in facilitating this transition, and the kinds of training and support viewed as most valuable by successful educational leaders. Recent studies conclude that the definition of leadership is local and affected by context and that it is socially constructed among people (Bolman and Deal, 1984; Tierney, 1988). The good higher education administrator is one who masters the knowledge and skills to perform necessary tasks with efficiency and effectiveness; the outstanding leader engages in reflective practice and continuous growth.
