Abstract | In 1960, Shirley Engle identified the primary purposes or "heart of social studies instruction" as educating citizens living in a democracy and teaching them the process of decision making based on values formulation through genuine problem solving. Engle's recommendations for helping students to confront and comprehend today's complex issues align closely with Albert Bandura's research on self-efficacy. Bandura believes that perceived self-efficacy, well-being, or a belief in one's personal capabilities regulates four human functions: cognitive, motivational, psychological, and social. His research indicates the importance of individuals' understanding of their core beliefs and the personal power they produce through actions (individually and as members of various groups) relevant to their decision-making processes. In this article, the author combined Engle's goals for social studies with Bandura's beliefs about self-efficacy as applied to career paths to conduct a research project with 32 practicing teachers, examining career education in today's elementary school classrooms. She describes the presence of career education in elementary school classrooms and some of the possibilities that career education offers for fulfilling Engle's roles and the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) definition of social studies education. The findings help identify the place of career education and can guide teachers with their efforts to facilitate decision making and enhance self-efficacy with their young students. (ERIC). |
