Abstract	Economics can be a tough subject, so good teachers find creative ways to teach it. However, only a few economic literacy programs promote "an economic way of thinking" and teach students how to analyze relevant economic problems, says Burton Folsom. Having examined several economic education programs, the author has found that many programs are nothing more than a collection of playful activities, or what she calls pretend learning. According to Federal Reserve Board Vice-Chairman Roger Ferguson in a 2002 National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) address, it's time to face facts: Economic literacy programs have increased, but students' knowledge of the subject has steadily declined. Instead of spending millions on economics programs, the author suggests spending more money on training teachers to understand the principles of economics and finance--and how to teach these concepts to their struggling students.
