AbstractIn this article, the authors describe Picture Power, a project they implemented during late spring in a full-day Montessori preschool-kindergarten program in Philadelphia. In this project, the authors set out to gather information about children's visual learning. The underlying question was whether artwork could provide useful clues to inform teachers about what children understand about literacy. This article explores what the children's drawings reveal about their viewing skills and examines the interplay between visual and verbal literacies. The children who took part in Picture Power absorbed details of the illustrations and accurately reproduced this information visually. Their drawings show sensitivity to each illustrator's overall composition and attention to various elements and detail within individual parts. Prompting children to draw and talk about their artwork may have a powerful effect on learning and remembering details from picture books. Although it is difficult to generalize the outcomes in this Montessori program to all classrooms, results indicate that Picture Power is an effective way to foster creative self-expression and literacy.
