AbstractIn the past 10 years the United States has seen a dramatic increase in the number of children who live without their parents in a household headed by a relative. More than 2.5 million grandparents now raise grandchildren without a biological parent present in the home. Grandparents who assume responsibility for their grandchildren are unsung heroes and heroines of the twenty-first century. Without them, many children whose parents are unwilling or unable to care for them would be in the foster care system. In this article, the authors emphasize that grandparents parenting the second time around need social support as well as up-to-date information about effective parenting, and that an early childhood program can address grandparents' needs for information and social support by offering workshops designed especially for them. Here, they discuss what early childhood educators can do to help them. Among other things, they present "Parenting the Second Time Around," a manual that explores grandparenting issues in a workshop series, as well as children's books about family relationships for grandparents and grandchildren to share.
