Abstract | Beijing's Xicheng district is one of the earliest comprehensive experimental zones for sustainable development in China. Very early on, the district government and the education bureau proposed environmental education for all the primary and secondary school students in the district and have attached great importance to and provided support for it in various aspects. In 1998, the district government, district education bureau, and Beijing Academy of Educational Science jointly carried out the research project called Environment, Population, and Development (EPD), a cross-disciplinary project of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. With thirty primary and secondary schools in the district involved in this project, the research focused on the exploration of the approaches and methods in which environmental education and the health education of the population in primary and secondary schools promote the sustainable development of the society. A survey about the environmental education ability among teachers in the experimental schools was conducted for the following purposes: (1) to further improve the effectiveness of environmental education in the district; (2) to keep abreast of the present situation of the environmental education ability among teachers in the EPD experimental schools within the district; and (3) to provide a basis for the contents and method of the teacher training in the next stage of the project. The results of the survey show that the teachers in the experimental schools generally have a correct attitude towards environmental education at present. In this article, the authors discuss some of the problems found through the survey and provide several suggestions on enhancing teachers' abilities in environmental education. (ERIC). |
