Abstract | Paul Muessig, an Advanced Technology Integrator with the Marine Corps Systems Command in Quantico, Virginia, and his wife Brenda were parents of three grown daughters--Laura, Elizabeth, and Hannah, now 21, 20 and 19 years old--when they decided they hadn't had their fill of raising children. So, nearly empty nesters, they decided to adopt four children in four years. What is remarkable is the fact that all of the four children they adopted have Down Syndrome. In this article, the author cites the reasons why the couple decided to undertake the care of these children, and describes the challenges and joy this special needs family experiences on a daily basis. Also discussed are support resources available to assist couples who adopt Down Syndrome children in meeting their medical, emotional, and social needs. (ERIC). |
