Abstract | This paper identifies the issues that arose from a year-long Digital Imaging project which took place in a multicultural, urban area of the UK, working with children aged from seven years in a primary school and investigating their uses of digital technology. The outcomes of the project are described, using existing theoretical frameworks relating to notions of digital inscription and the grammar of images. The paper discusses in particular the multi-modal representations that were produced by children, and the extent to which the practices described relate to previous research in this area. Further analysis reveals three key issues: the effectiveness of the Kress and van Leeuwen mapping construct for this study, aspects of meaning-making in these pupil representations and the degree of success or achievement perceived to be associated with this use of digital technology, resulting in implications of these approaches for curriculum and pedagogy.
