Abstract | In a recent survey, the authors asked 37 elementary teachers to describe websites that they found to be the most helpful in planning to teach about voting, elections in general, and the Presidential election of 2004 in particular. For this article, they selected what were, in their judgment, the most useful websites--flexible enough to use with different age groups. These websites included commercial, nonprofit, and government sites. Teachers should be aware of partisanship and bias at any given site, but they need not necessarily exclude a partisan site from student viewing. For example, students can visit the websites of various political parties and examine party platforms (or leading statements of various types) on a given public policy issue, such as health care for the elderly or energy resources. In any such exercise, students should look at multiple, contrasting websites, examining varying points of view on any particular subject. Suggestions on specific activities for grades K-2 and grades 3-5 are included. (Contains 2 endnotes.) (ERIC). |
