AbstractArt teacher Linda Popp and artist H. Ed Smith team up to teach about creating sculptural clocks. This lesson shows how a portrait can be created using various media. Students based projects on someone in their lives they have known for a long time. This sculptural problem was part of a series of portrait and self-portrait lessons with a high school Art II class. The series focused on direct observation and making improvements in realistic rendering of the model using a variety of media. This narrative clock sculpture problem gave students an opportunity to explore a totally new way to create a portrait. Students had to construct a clock/assemblage based on a person who had great meaning in their lives. They had to select a person with whom they had a relationship with over time (the clock element). They brainstormed ideas for metaphorical objects that could tell their subject's story. The form of the sculpture could be part of the story. In their journal they wrote an "8 x 10 Idea Resource" (ten stories, thoughts, characteristics, memories, etc. about the subject, each multiplied by eight possible objects that could be used to communicate that item). During the sculpture-making process, students made choices based on formal, expressive, and functional concerns. (ERIC).
