| Abstract | This article discusses two twentieth-century stock market crashes: the crash of 1929 and the crash of 1987. When this material is presented to students, they see important parallels between the two historical events. But despite remarkable similarities in the severity and many other aspects of the two crashes, the crash of 1929 was followed by the Great Depression, whereas the market rebounded almost immediately from the crash of 1987. The consequences had obvious implications for the well being of investors in these two periods. What accounts for the differences? Are there some important economics lessons here, for both history and personal finance classes? The discussion provided in this article represents only a brief summary of some of the issues and opinions about these two stock market crashes. As a teaching tool, this information could lead to discussions about similarities and differences in the crashes themselves, their causes, and the aftermath in each case, all in the context of Fed policies. From both a historical and personal finance perspective, students discussing these topics can analyze the role of the Fed in supporting the banking system and thus helping to prevent serious repercussions from stock market crashes.
