| Abstract | This article describes one classroom's experience implementing a art lesson aimed to reinforce the notion of "nonrepresentational." The lesson applied the elements of nonrepresentational art, as well as balance, unity, and line while inspiring surprise and curiosity in students who commented on their designs once they had completed the exercise and asked to see the compositions of students seated nearby. The article also describes an assignment given to the class after this lesson was implemented, that reinforced the ideas of art and principles of design. Each student was given a small, old chair and a bag of various items such as a metal hoop and Styrofoam ball. The students were instructed to use only the items in the bag to to create a unified, nonrepresentational design on, around, or extended from the chair. Students effectively produced a wide variety of their own designs to form unique, nonrepresentational, yet functional, chairs. (ERIC). |
