AbstractIn this research, we have demonstrated that a new subdiscipline in the field of Medical Sociology is urgently needed to integrate, interpret, and synthesize the interrelationships and implications of genetic discoveries, treatments, and prognoses upon societal behavior. That subdiscipline in our view is "Genetic Sociology."We applied the principles of medical sociology to our current understanding of medical genetics. Specifically, we focus on the SCP (Society, Culture, Personality) model in several areas of analysis: the impact of genetic disorders (both physical and mental illnesses) on demographic / epidemiological findings within a society, the belief structure of a culture, and personality development through the life cycle. By linking genetic disorders to societal behaviors, through the SCP model, the relationships of various institutions of society such as the family, education, and government are explored.Given the fact that human knowledge is never compartmentalized and given the fundamental thesis that there are concrete interrelationships between the natural and social sciences, the claim is made that "Genetic Sociology" can illuminate a wide range of issues within the present critical and fierce debate of embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, genetic engineering, and the implications of the human genome project in medical genetics.
