Abstract | Describes the attempted 1933 merger between the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, discussing educational and institutional issues exposed during the debate. The universities and their presidents embodied very different philosophies of higher education. Circumstances surrounding the failed merger reveal much about the range of possibilities open to universities during this period in the history of U.S. higher education. (SM) |
