Abstract | For a business law class at any level or format, a field trip to a court is critical to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This article encourages legal studies instructors to utilize field trips to a court as an experiential learning opportunity for business law and legal studies courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels for courses offered in an in-person or online format, with options provided to meet the needs of these varying learning environments and to meet student needs. This article outlines the value of experiential learning and field trips, specifically a court visit, as an integral component of a business law and legal studies course. This article addresses: (1) the value of a court visit as an experiential learning opportunity; (2) learning outcomes and the benefits of a court visit; (3) preparation and implementation of the court visit; (4) accompanying assessments to reinforce learning outcomes; and (5) a classroom debrief as a means of critical reflection. Based upon multiple court visits with students at two different institutions, this article shares best practices and challenges as well as sample agendas, questions, and considerations to help support important learning outcomes with a complementary assessment to demonstrate the achievement of such. Additional experiential learning opportunities are provided to meet similar learning outcomes despite challenges to a collective in-person visit as needed. (ERIC). |
