AbstractIn the realm of education, the concept of self-reflection has many implications for educators. While Jarvais Jackson will focus on educators who are classroom teachers in this article, similar implications apply to educators who serve other roles in schools and communities. Understanding oneself, including biases and epistemological stances, allows educators to make pedagogical and content choices that prepare students to achieve socially and academically. It is a fact that K-12 schools and teacher education programs historically omit and construe the histories of non-white Eurocentric people. Further, the tools that teachers receive in teacher education programs do not adequately produce an improved education for Black students. Instead, an ongoing cycle continues to uplift whiteness while deprecating Blackness. In this article, the author reflects on his early moments as an educator and the harsh realities he faced, and shares his journey of the change he embraced and enacted. (ERIC).
