Abstract | This article describes ways for early educators to support communication of young children with complex communication needs (CCN) in classrooms through a simple three-step process. First, identify the child's preferred activities and items. Second, identify vocabulary and prepare the augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system. Third, use interactive strategies like (1) modeling, (2) asking a question, (3) waiting, (4) prompting, and (5) responding. These strategies help support the communication of children with CCN. These three steps can be used in activities throughout the day so the children with CCN in the classroom can build young children's communication and obtain the most out of their learning opportunities.
