AbstractIn higher education, the underachievement of minority males is consistently reflected in research, where data have shown a persistence gap separating minority males from other student groups in measures of academic progress and college completion. Campuses typically did little, if anything, to build the capacity of faculty and staff to educate and work with men of color. As a result, when there has been little to no building of capacity for this work along with consistently poor outcomes, administration begins to ask the question: "Who is to blame?" for the continued decline of performance. In the past 20 years there has been an emersion of black male initiatives, more recently probably within the last 10 those programs have adapted to focus on all minority men. These programs are established for one common goal, which is to provide support to help to recruit, retain, and help these men graduate. A wide variety of black male initiative programs exist on college campuses across the United States. Over time this topic has been researched and talked about, the time range is 2011 to 2014 where most articles seem to have come out. Another study was done in 2018 by Brooms that focuses on black male initiatives. While his piece focuses specifically on black males, his outcomes are transferable to minority male programs. All of these men provide support and the context of support and best practices on how to support minority males. This article brings attention to the previous strategies and ties those to the study done by Brooms in 2018 to show these are still best practices. It closes with five suggestions to build to the literature of work-around minority male initiatives. (ERIC).
