Abstract | Student motivation is a critical element of engagement, learning, and achievement. With this in mind, teachers are particularly interested in motivating their students to read. However, getting students to do so can be a difficult task, especially if they lack confidence in choosing personally interesting books. We advocate for carefully nurturing confidence in choosing as a critical step in the development of confident readers. We also advocate for employing Read-Aloud as a scaffolded instructional strategy within a specific framework and collecting reading behaviors data from a sample student group as a way to hasten the development of reading motivation for all.
