Abstract | Roslyn Davis Williams (1921-1997), a Montessori parent who became a leader in American Montessori education, followed a long tradition of Black educators who sought to end the scourge of racial segregation in America. In 1967, facing the imminent closure of her daughter's Montessori preschool program, Williams (along with other parents) founded the Central Harlem Association of Montessori Parents (CHAMP, Inc.) and was chosen as CHAMP's leader. In the years to come, Roslyn D. Williams followed her forebears in selfless acts of service to her community: to make permanent a CHAMP preschool that embraced racial integration (what might be called inclusion today) and to build on that foundation with a Montessori teacher education program for adults. Williams' accomplishments were long-lasting, and her dedication and commitment to furthering the well-being of all children remain inspirational today. (ERIC). |
