Abstract | A full year after the COVID-19 crisis began, most schools are still offering instruction completely online or via hybrid models. As educators were forced to quickly adjust to the new digital environment of education, the nation faced an unprecedented series of social crises, including rising unemployment and economic disparities, racial discrimination and police violence, a polarizing election campaign, the proliferation of fake news and misinformation, and the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The authors turned to experienced social studies teachers to find out how they responded, asking them: What were the challenges you faced and how did you overcome them? Their stories help to inform an understanding of the impact of COVID-19 and the transition to digital learning. They highlight the resources and professional learning support teachers need to provide as well as new opportunities for innovation in the field. The experiences and insider knowledge of teachers may impact the way social studies is taught well into the future. (ERIC). |
