AbstractTraditionally, care for the environment has always played a role in the Dakota-Lakota way of life, which includes taking care of the air. As a tribal college originally chartered by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Sitting Bull College (SBC) takes seriously its role as an institution guided by Lakota-Dakota culture, values, and language. These guiding principles pulse through the college's commitment to building intellectual capital through academic, career, and technical education, and to promoting economic and social development. Since opening its doors in 1973, the college has grown into its name, secured accreditation, and built a campus which can accommodate the hundreds of members of the SBC community that come through its doors each semester. The Facility for Innovative Atmospheric Research and Education (FIARE) at SBC began as part of an environmental science internship with NASA's Langley Research Center half a decade ago. In addition to biology and ethnobotany, the college's Environmental Science Program has been known for its strength in water and soil science. This article describes how FIARE offers a way to expand on what has already been shown to work at SBC. [The article was written with Allen Hastings.] (ERIC).
