AbstractFive years ago, the Nevada Association of School Psychologists (NVASP) began to systematically identify issues across the state and local landscape that were negatively impacting the profession. By identifying one problem, they ended up identifying several critical issues as many of them influence and exacerbate each other. For example, in the Clark County School District (CCSD), low pay coupled with high ratios made recruitment, training, and retention of school psychologists nearly impossible. The average school psychologist to student ratio is approximately 1:2,100, with some school psychologists practicing with a 1:7,000 ratio. In a district comprising approximately 324,000 students across 384 schools (Nevada Department of Education, 2021), Clark County is the fifth largest school district in the United States yet employs only 159 school psychologists, with many of them on part-time contracts. They also recognized that many of the issues CCSD faced reflected statewide realities. Successfully addressing CCSD's issues would require collaborative district and state-level efforts. During the past 5 years, the school psychologists in CCSD, in partnership with the leadership in NVASP and the local collective bargaining unit, began a campaign for long-term solutions to the increasingly dire work situation. The article is a look at the progression of successes that have transpired in the Silver State over the past 5 years, and the power of collective voice and purpose. (ERIC).
