Abstract | An often repeated argument is that young children can not carry out meaningful research. The authors, who are lecturers involved in teacher training and childhood studies, are interested in the impact that children can have on their school lives and believe that it is often underestimated. The Young Researchers Project (YRP) was created in Birmingham, England to work in schools with children acting as researchers. It recognizes the benefits and challenges of working with children, particularly when doing so alongside teachers who also may be research novices. The authors supported teachers' developing knowledge in the face of uncertainties and challenges to ensure that they listen to the voices of children in their schools through a meaningful research process. Acknowledging diversity in school type, knowledge of staff in the research process, and their ability as academics to provide support has culminated in the design of a model that is now embedded and recognized as fundamental to the project.
