AbstractThe authors developed a teaching project for students to debate data and workplace privacy dilemmas, formulate plans of action for the use of certain data about workers and job applicants, and apply the law to reach and defend their solutions. The purpose of this versatile exercise is to sensitize both undergraduate and graduate business students to legal issues associated with the use of data analytics, also referred to as "people analytics," as well as to the ethical implications of employer use of employee personal data obtained through the use of technology. This article introduces the learning objectives and the underlying pedagogy for the exercise, provides the project details, examines several legal issues in the Big Data Project that instructors will need to understand to effectively assign some or all of the five topics raised by the exercise and to facilitate class discussion to ensure that students address the pertinent legal and ethical issues, and offers the benefits of using the Big Data Project in class.
