AbstractMany organizations, such as the National Education Association (NEA, n.d.), have written policy briefs explaining the need for cultural competence within a diverse cultural climate. But cultural competence is not the norm. To best serve students, Endiya Griffin asserts districts must be urged to require that all faculty engage in extensive cultural competency training. No student deserves to endure a teacher who remains silent in the face of oppression. Griffin goes on to say that students of color should not be tasked with mitigating the underlying biases of their teachers. For teachers to do their job effectively, these biases must be eradicated before they even enter the classroom. Herein, she offers four recommendations to educators for creating culturally competent, identity-supporting, and inclusive classrooms. (ERIC).
