Abstract | With all the discussion about what best prepares students for work and life, two candidates are interdisciplinary thinking and international awareness. This summer, exactly 30 years after the author graduated from college, her favorite professor at Bates College retired, which led her to think about her own early experiences with these ways of thinking and being. In this article, the author shares how her favorite professor helped her to have a genuine interest in people unlike herself, and to understand the necessity and value of the hard work of reading, researching, interviewing, seeing, feeling, talking, and listening: all in the interest of making sense of how we live in the world, what matters most for people, and why.
