Abstract | During the 2019 American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) Leadership Conference held in Arlington, Virginia, two separate panels of university professionals in the field of visual impairment discussed topics related to education. The two panels briefly explored the issues of "Preparing Teachers to Work with Students with CVI: The University Perspective" and "Mentoring Doctoral and Other Students to Contribute Critical Research to 'JVIB.'" Roundtable discussions regarding both topics were included as part of the conference to share the models that are used by various university programs to address these critical areas. Several moderators guided the dialog and asked direct questions to the university professionals to maintain the structure of the sessions. This article describes two conversations from the conference sessions: (1) how personnel preparation programs are addressing cortical visual impairment (CVI); and (2) why mentorship is important for aspiring researchers. [This commentary is based on the conference sessions, "Preparing Teachers to Work with Students with CVI: The University Perspective," by Laura Bozeman, Mindy Ely, Kathryn Botsford, and Yue-Ting Siu; and "Mentoring Doctoral and Other Students to Contribute Critical Research to JVIB," facilitated by Sandra Lewis, Rona Pogrund, and Rebecca Burrichter, which took place Thursday, February 28, 2019, and Friday, March 1, 2019, respectively, at the AFB Leadership Conference.] (ERIC). |
