Abstract | Preschool teachers are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of nature connection during early childhood, including the development of healthy bodies, social-emotional competency and eventual academic success (Sobel, 2015; Warden, 2012). However, for many preschools located in urban settings, the question isn't whether nature connection is important for young children -- the question is how to enable it? This article lays out an incremental approach to achieving nature connection for urban preschool teachers by telling the story of how one preschool -- the one I direct -- has approached the problem. The approach we took can be used in almost any preschool setting to increase nature connectedness. It is incremental, and takes time, but its impact can be transformative and lasting.
