Abstract | Although we may not always know how best to approach sensitive issues in the classroom, our responsibilities to our students are fairly straightforward. By enrolling in our classes, students essentially sign a contract. They will read, we will provide expertise, all will discuss, and all will learn, at least in theory. In this politically charged time, do our obligations as political scientists extend beyond the classroom? Specifically, do we have a responsibility to discuss politics with our family members? If so, how? While there are many reasons people become political science professors, the authors of this piece explore the notion that political scientists, by virtue of their expertise as researchers and educators, have a civic duty that extends beyond the classroom to the dinner table. The authors here hope to spark an ongoing dialogue about education, politics, and family. (As Provided). |
