Abstract | In many Canadian schools the acronym BEDMAS is used as a mnemonic to assist students in remembering the order of operations: Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction. In the USA the mnemonic is PEMDAS, where 'P' denotes parentheses, along with the phrase "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally". In the UK the mnemonic BIDMAS is used, where I stands for indices. Other variations include BODMAS, POMDAS or PODMAS, where O stands for Order. While researchers argue that mnemonics do not support conceptual understanding and may lead to mistakes (e.g., Ameis, 2011, Hewitt, 2012), still they are used by many teachers. Note that while 'parentheses' (P) and 'brackets' (B) are synonyms, the order of division and multiplication (D and M) is reversed in PEMDAS vs. BEDMAS. This order is of interest in this paper, following an explicit assertion of a student, that "division should be performed before multiplication." (As Provided). |
