Abstract | Movies--especially "world cinema"--have tremendous potential to stimulate students' interest, thinking skills, and even empathy. As educators, it's crucial that we guide students in developing critical thinking, so that they can become intelligent consumers of visual media, able to appreciate different perspectives. It's our responsibility to open their minds to the world. Film has a role to play in this undertaking. Teachers often recognize the power of movies made outside the United States (what we call "world cinema") to expose students to other cultures. But they don't always realize that watching, discussing, and even making trailers or similar products tied to movies can develop students' critical thinking and analytical skills as well as their creativity.
