| Abstract | The purpose of this article is to describe the shift toward community-based practice in contemporary art, its implications for art education practice, and the story of a powerful collaboration between a community-based artist and an interdisciplinary team of teachers. The article is intended to encourage educators to provide students with opportunities to explore and engage in difficult issues and to assure them that their ideas are an essential part of working for social justice within the community.
