AbstractIn this article Matthew Etherington shares his experiences, successes, and challenges in implementing a 7th-grade fashion design unit in which he attempts to realize his curricular vision through critical visual culture pedagogy and role-playing. During the 4-week lesson period, Etherington's instructional checkpoints were broken into three main components: critical analysis, creation skills, and summative group critique. After discussion and critical analysis of fashion contexts, students were required to create their own fashion designs based on the theme of what they envisioned to be the fashion of the future. Idea boards were created showcasing original conceptual drawings and then students realized those sketches into a wearable garment using sewing machines, fabric, and/or other appropriate materials. Finally, students critiqued each other's projects through a mock fashion week role-playing activity at the end of the unit. (ERIC).
